(Disclosure: I know the developer and received an advanced copy of the game for testing purposes) Let's get this out of the way immediately: The Hayseed Knight isn't a dating sim or a romantic comedy like a surprising amount of people think, it's an excellent linear story with a certain amount of choices along the way. So unless you really don’t like linear gameplay, feel free to read this review as a 10/10. Though given how much of a passion project this is for the dev, I have no doubts that the remaining chapters will be finished eventually.
THE HAYSEED KNIGHT HOTTIE FOR FREE
The only downsides to the game right now are its very linear visual novel gameplay structure and the fact that it consists of 3 chapters, with one more chapter and an epilogue to be released for free in the future. It doesn’t hurt that it looks and sounds amazing, either, with animated high-quality art and professional-level voice acting throughout.
It’s genuinely funny, thoughtful and thoroughly emotionally engaging. From the sometimes surprisingly complex characters and the highly detailed setting inspired by historical Al-Andalus (medieval Spain) to the nonlinear storytelling structure and the way the game weaves themes of gender identity and racism into the plot, The Hayseed Knight is a densely-packed narrative experience which can be enjoyed on many different levels.
